Here in the Hudson Valley, shade gardens are a common and cherished feature of the landscape. Mature maples, oaks, and sycamore trees create ideal conditions for a wide variety of plants that thrive in dappled light.

For those fortunate enough to have landscapes protected from deer, hostas and hydrangeas remain reliable classics for good reason.

Hostas provide an incredible range of foliage colors, textures, and sizes—from miniature varieties perfect for borders to dramatic blue-green specimens that anchor an entire planting bed.

Hosta also make a great companion plant that fills in when bleeding hearts fade.

An adorable new variety we have in stock is Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears.' This is a charming miniature hosta with thick, rounded blue-gray leaves (that resemble tiny mouse ears!)

It typically grows just 6 to 8 inches tall and spreads to about 12 to 18 inches wide, making it an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, and containers. In midsummer, it produces lavender flowers on short stems and thrives in partial to full shade with consistently moist, well-drained soil.

Hydrangeas, meanwhile, reward gardeners with months of spectacular blooms, bringing shades of white, pink, blue, and lime green to the garden from early summer into fall.
