Reccomended Salt Tolerant Trees

Acer campestre, Hedge Maple, Good for plantings along streets and roads. Can be pruned as a hedge or grown as tree with rounded dense habit. Grows 25’ to 35’ high and wide.Zones 4 to 8.

Acer plantoides, Norway Maple, Yellow flowers in the spring. Drought and heat tolerant. Used frequently for urban use. Grows 40’ to 50’ high and wide. Zones 3 to 7.

Acer pseudoplatanus, Planetree or Sycamore Maple, Lacks the show of good fall color that is common among other maples. Tolerates sandy or clay soil. Grows 40 ‘ to 60’ high, 30’ to 40’ wide. Zones 4 to 7.

Acer saccharinum, Silver Maple, Truly fast growing shade tree. Suffers breakage in storms. Don’t plant near sidewalks or drains. Grows 50’ to 70’ high and 30’ to 45’ wide. Zones 3 to 9.

Acer saccharum, Sugar Maple, Yellow, red, and orange fall color. Likes well-drained, acidic soils. Grows 60’ to 75’ high and 40’ to 50’ wide. Zones 3 to 8.

Crataegus crusgalli, Cockspur Hawthorn, Low-branched tree with horizontal branches with 2” thorns. Dark green leaves turn metalic purple-red leaves.Great for mass plantings and screen plantings. Grows 20’ to 30’ high and 20’ to 35’ wide.

Elaeagus angustifolia, Russian-Olive, Holds up incredibly well to de-icing salt. Silvery leaves and loose, roundish growth habit. Grows 12’ to 20’ high and wide. (Can grow up to 30’ high and wide.) Zones 2 to 7.

Fraxinus americana, White Ash, A beautiful large shade tree. Great fall color. Leave ample room to grow. Grows 50’ to 80’ high and wide. Zones 3 to 9.

Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Green Ash, Used for commercial plantings and street planting. Grows 50’ to 60’ high, variable spread. Zones 3 to 9.

Gleditsia triacanthos var. inemis, Thornless Common Honeylocust, Beautiful shape and fall color. Grows 30’ to 70’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 9.

Hippophae rhamnoides, Seabuckthorn, Grayish green foliage, rounded small tree, grows well seaside in sandy infertile soil. Grows 8’ to 30’ high 10’ to 40’ wide. Zones 4 to 7.

Ilex opaca, American Tree Holly, Hundreds of cultivars have been named. Likes acidic soil in sun or partial shade. Grows 40’ to 50’ high and 18’ to 40’ wide.

Juglans nigra, Black Walnut, Drops green rounded fruit in the summer and fall.Grows 50’ to 75’ high. Zones 4 to 9.

Juglans regia, Persian or English Walnut, Produces the common edible nuts. Round open habit. Likes loamy soils. Grows 40’ to 60’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 9.

Juniperus virginiana, Eastern Redcedar, Tough evergreen, great in group or screen plantings. Can grow where many others cannot survive. Grows 40’ to 50’ high and 8’ to 20’ wide.

Larix decidua, European Larch, A deciduous conifer with a nice pyramidical growth habit. Holds up well in windy areas, in moist or dry soils. Grows 75’ high and 30’ wide. Zones 2 to 6.

Larix laricina, Tamarack, Best in cold climates, moist or boggy soils. Grows 30’ to 50’ high, tall and narrow growth habit. Zones 1 to 4.

Magnolia grandiflora

Morus alba, Common or White Mulberry, Urban tolerant, grows well in sun to part shade. “Urbaba” is a fruitless variety. Grows 30’ to 50’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 8.

Nyssa sylvatica, Black Tupelo, Spectacular fall color. Grows 30’ to 50’ high and 20’ to 30’ wide. Zones 4 to 9.

Picea pungens var. glauca, Blue Spruce, Beautiful blue needle color, varieties include: ‘Fat Albert’, ‘Hoopsii’, and ‘Thompsenii’. Grows 30’ to 60’ high and 10’ to 20’ wide. Zones 2 to 7.

Pinus banksiana, Jack Pine, Adapts well in sandy and clay soils. Great for windbreaks and mass plantings. Grows 35’ to 50’ high and variable spreads. Zones 2 to 6.

Pinus mugo, Mugo Pine, dwarf forms are 10’ or less and shrubby growth habit. Other varieties can grow 15’ to 20’ high and wide. Zones 2 to 7.

Pinus sylvestris, Scotch Pine, Flat needles, open wide-speading growth habit.Grows 30’ to 60’ high and 30’ to 40’ wide. Zones 2 to 7.

Populus alba, Silver or White Poplar, Wide speading, rounded growth. Grows 40’ to 70’ high and wide. Zones 3 to 9.

Prunus serotina, Black Cherry, White flowers bloom in May, followed by reddish-black fruit. Grows 50’ to 60’ high and 20’ to 30’ wide. Zones 3 to 9.

Quercus albus, White Oak, Good as a specimen and also in groves. Grows 50’ to 80’ high and wide. Zones 3 to 8.

Quercus rubra, Red Oak, Prefers acid well-drained soil. Rounded growth habit. Grows 60’ to 75’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 7.

Rhamnus frangula, Glossy Buckthorn, Upright and narrow growing habit. Great long and curled leaf texture on varieties such as ‘Aspenifolia’. Grows 10’ tall and 6’wide. The variety ‘Ron Williams’ is more compact with denser foliage. Grows 6” tall and 2’ wide. Zones 2 to 7.

Robinia pseudoacacia, Black Locust, Fragrant flowers bloom in May and June. Needs full sun, but can tolerate sandy or infertile soils. Grows 30’ to 50’ high.

Salix alba ‘Tristis’, Weeping-Gold White Willow, Picturesque planted next to a pond, lake or stream. Golden fall color. Like all willow trees, whips and small braches are constantly shed. Grows 50’ to 70’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 9.

Tamarix ramosissima, Five-Stamen Tamarix, Excellent salt tolerance. Grayish green, feathery foliage with pink flowers in June and July on new growth. Prune in late winter and plant in full sun for best flowering. Grows 10’ to 15’ high. Zones 2 to 8.
