Winter Intrest Shrubs
Cornus alba, Red Twig Dogwood, or Yellow Twig Dogwood, Also
known as Tatarian Dogwood, This deciduos shrub can be grwn in
sun or shade, and after the leaves fall the brightly colored stems
can be truly spectacular in the winter garden. Grows 8’
to 10’ high and 5’ to 10’ wide. Zones 2 to 6.
Cornus sanguinea, Blood Twig Dogwood, ‘Winter Flame’
is an interesting variety with yellow/orange winterstems. For
best winter stem color, cut all the way to the ground in late
winter to promote new growth, which is the most intese colors.
Grows 6’ to 15’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 7.
Cornus sericea, Redosier Dogwood, Very similar
to Cornus alba, except this variety is more suckering and naturalizing.
‘Silver and Gold” is a nice variety with variegated
leaves and yellow stems
Euonymus alatus, Winged Euonymus or Firebush,
Great, bright red fall color. Very textured flakey, corky “wings”
on the bark of the stems. If the shrubs are heavily pruned, the
“wings” get bigger. Grows 15’ to 20’ high
and wide. Zones 4 to 8.
Heptacodium miconioides, Seven-Son Flower, The
bark exfoliates to expose light brown underbark. Fragrant flowers
bloom from August into October. In October and November the sepals
turn red. Prefers moist soil and full sun.Grows 10’ to 20’
high and 8’ to 18’ wide. Zones 4 to 8.
Kerria japonica, Japanese Kerria, Bright green
stems, wider than it is tall. Great lemon yellow foliage in the
fall. Yellow flowers April through May. If the shrub gets scraggly,
cut the shrub to the ground after flowering. Grows 3’ to
6’ high and wide. Zones 4 to 9.
Poncirus trifoliata, Hardy-Orange, Green stems
are attractive in winter have 1” to 2” long, sharp
spines. White flowers bloom in April and May are followed in by
yellow fruit that ripen in September and October.
Pyracantha coccinea, Pyracantha, Bright red/orange
fruit ripen in September and persist in to winter. Great for hedge
plantings and espalier. Grows 6’ to 18’ high and wide.

Salix caprea, Pussy Willow, Yellow/brown to
dark brown stems with fat purple buds that open in to furry gray
catkins. Perfers moist soil and full sun. Grows 15’ high
and wide. Zones 4 to 8.

reddish purple stems and fat red buds that open to silver-gray
catkins. Perfers moist soil and full sun. Grows 15’ high
and wide. Zones 4 to 8.
