FREE WEEKEND CLASSES!

July 26th 2008 -An ALL DAY FREE EVENT -Victoria Gardens in ROSENDALE invites you to visit for Garden Day, a full day of FREE lectures and classes covering topics that many of you have been asking about. Our clients and customers have told us they are concerned with conservation and “going green” as a gardeners and as citizens. We kept those concerns in mind as we scheduled our annual Garden Day.

9 am Cheryl Alloway, Master Gardener
Xeriscape gardening: By applying these simple techniques you will be conserving water and improving local water quality - all while still having a beautiful garden.

10 am Frank Almquist, Master Gardener
Rain gardens: A rain garden is a planted depression that is designed to absorb rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas like roofs, driveways, walkways, and compacted lawn areas. This reduces rain runoff by allowing storm water to soak into the ground (as opposed to flowing into storm drains and surface waters which causes erosion, water pollution, flooding, and diminished groundwater). Rain gardens cut down on the amount of pollution reaching creeks and streams.

11 am Peter Landau, ISA Certified Arborist and ASCA Consulting Arborist, Owner of Northeast Arboricultural Associates, How trees conserve: Trees conserve energy by shading buildings and paved surfaces, filtering airborne pollutants, removing atmospheric carbon dioxide, and reducing storm water runoff.

1 pm Victoria Coyne, Moss as lawn: We've had so many questions about growing moss as a greener alternative to a grass lawn, ever since The New York Times article - "Moss Makes a Lush, No-Care Lawn" (May 1, 2008). So we've created this class to answer all your questions.

2pm Sarah Williford and Kevin Skvorak, Regeneration CSA
Sustainable food production: Permaculture based, no-till systems that use no chemicals and avoid or eliminate fossil fuel use, and regenerate our soils.

And more to come!
